We were on holiday near Davos and a\u00a0<a title=\"Penichette\u00ae\" href=\"https:\/\/www.riverly.com\/en\/boats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Penichette<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0was on show in the ski resort. We were intrigued by this, so we decided to give it a try with a couple of friends. If only we\u2019d known how addicted we\u2019d get to\u00a0<strong>self-drive boat hire<\/strong>&#8230;! Since then, we\u2019ve never missed a chance for a canal boat holiday. At that time, in the mid-eighties, the\u00a0<a title=\"Canal du Midi in France\" href=\"https:\/\/www.riverly.com\/en\/boating-holidays\/france\/canal-du-midi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Canal du Midi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0was still a big secret; very few people took canal holidays. These days, people know that\u00a0<strong>barge cruises<\/strong>\u00a0are a great way to have a relaxing holiday. That\u2019s why we prefer to go out of season, in spring or autumn, when it\u2019s quieter. As I always say, the\u00a0<strong>Canal du Midi<\/strong>\u00a0is Louis XIV at 8 kilometres an hour! You can stop where you like, take your time, take in your natural surroundings. We\u2019ve also got to know nearly all the\u00a0<strong>lock keepers<\/strong>\u00a0(we always take them a nice bar of Swiss chocolate!). There\u2019s a really friendly atmosphere when you\u2019re cruising along a canal. It\u2019s much more peaceful than boating along a river. Another advantage is that you don\u2019t get in the way of the cargo barges, which can happen on the\u00a0<strong>Sa\u00f4ne<\/strong>, for example. We\u2019ve cruised on all the stretches of the Canal du Midi, from the Rh\u00f4ne to S\u00e8te, from S\u00e8te to B\u00e9ziers, from B\u00e9ziers to Toulouse and as far as Bordeaux.
