From your departure base, you can easily reach the Nevers river port by boat via a branch of the Canal latéral à la Loire. This City of Art and History, once the capital of faience pottery, boasts a rich architectural heritage: the Ducal Palace, the Bohier Tower, the Saint-Cyr–Sainte-Julitte Cathedral, and more. Car racing fans take note: the famous Magny-Cours circuit is just ten kilometers from Plagny,about 40 minutes by bike.
Guétin Canal Bridge
Your river cruise will take you across the magnificent Guétin canal bridge. This 343-meter-long structure, built from Apremont-sur-Allier stone and composed of 18 arches, spans the Allier River, making it one of the longest canal bridges in France,a true highlight of your boating holiday in the Nivernais region. Just before reaching the canal bridge, nature lovers can follow a marked trail leading to the “Bec d’Allier,” where the Allier meets the Loire. This remarkable natural site, a favorite among birdlife, is protected by WWF. Educational panels line the hiking path, and a birdwatching observatory awaits at the end. A must-see for amateur and experienced birdwatchers alike.
Apremont-sur-Allier
With its castle, stunning floral park, and carriage museum, Apremont-sur-Allier invites you to wander. Moor at the Guétin river stop (6 km away) to explore this jewel of the Berry, ranked among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France.”
Marseille-lès-Aubigny
A peaceful stop at the junction of the Loire lateral canal and the Berry canal, home to the region’s last traditional boatyard.
