Explore the river and lake of Tisza by renting a canal boat

Pastures, orchards, farms with thatched roof buildings, wildlife and unspoilt nature…just some of what you’ll find around Lake Tisza. There are no big cities here – just pretty villages packed with charm and waiting to be discovered as you arrive by self-drive canal boat. Crews who love the more energetic activities can try canoeing, bike rides, water-skiing, jet-skiing and sailing. In Spring 2020, Riverly was the first boating holiday company to offer canal boat rental in the whole of Hungary. No previous experience or a licence is needed – the canal boats are easy to drive and there are no locks to negotiate on these waterways making these boating holiday itineraries great for beginners.

Explore the river and lake of Tisza by renting a canal boat

Lake Tisza, with many islands and connecting canals, is surrounded by many family-friendly towns and villages including Abádszalók, Tiszafüred, Kisköre and Poroszló. These are great stop-off points to moor up and set off on foot (or bike) to explore. Find excellent restaurants showcasing the very best of local gastronomy – bouillabaisse fish Tisza, fresh fish, palacsinta (pancakes stuffed with meat). If fishing is your thing, why not try your hand at catching dinner straight from the rich waters of the River Tisza – dining alfresco on the deck of your stylish canal boat. Your boating holiday on the Tisza also sees you cruise in the heart of the Hortobágy National Park, a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biodiversity reserve. As the largest area of open grassland in central Europe and known as the “Puszta” it is home to Hungarian oxen, water buffaloes and Racka sheep. If you’re lucky you’ll spot the “Csikos” who are herding these animals wearing their traditional horse-herdsmen costume in respect to their ancestors.
