Cave and Citadel of Besançon

This fortified village, perched beneath dramatic limestone cliffs overlooking the valley, lies along the Doubs River and the Rhône-Rhine Canal. During a stop by boat, discover the prehistoric cave known as the “Trou de la Mère Clochette,” the remains of ancient fortifications and the fortified bridge gate, the keep, 15th-century houses, the church rebuilt in 1792, and the 15th-century Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Consolation. Climb to the esplanade of the former 13th-century castle and the “Rocher du Saut de la Pucelle” for a stunning panoramic view of the valley and surrounding region,on clear days, you can even see Mont Blanc.

Stop at Orchamps on the Rhône-Rhine Canal to see this 1846 historical monument, blending classical and early industrial architecture.

Near the Osselle lock on the Rhône-Rhine Canal, moor your boat and take a short trip (3 km) to the Grotte d’Osselle. A fascinating site featuring stalactites, stalagmites, and the largest cave bear necropolis in Europe. Bring warm clothes,temperatures rarely exceed 13°C.

This looping Doubs village is full of peculiar sights: a Gothic-styled restored château, a viewpoint atop Notre-Dame-du-Mont chapel, a miniature Lourdes grotto, and an underground canal opening into a circular basin.

This village takes its name from the medieval Montferrand lords. The remaining tower ruin offers scenic views over the Doubs valley. Easily accessed on foot from the riverbank.

A nature stop at the Woka Avanne water sports base. Unique in Franche-Comté, the “Eco Paddler” route lets you canoe down an 8 km loop of the Doubs River with an audio guide to discover the surrounding nature.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Vauban fortifications, Besançon is home to one of France’s most beautiful citadels. Overlooking the old town, the fortress offers breathtaking views over the city, nestled in a bend of the Doubs River, and the surrounding countryside.
