A rural region filled with waterways, with stops at Germany’s most iconic cities

Welcome to the wilds of Brandenburg, one of the most popular areas of Germany for boating holidays, where you’ll find peace, tranquillity and the chance to recharge your batteries. As well as its many waterways, this region has lots to offer if you’re interested in art, architecture and history. You’ll fall in love with Potsdam, the chosen spot of the Kings of Prussia, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Heading north, you really have to stop at the German capital, Berlin. Boat hire here gives you access to Berlin’s parks, hipster districts and all the sights that tell the tale of the city’s remarkable history. As you head further north towards the Neuruppin Lakes, make the most of the silence and grandeur of the natural environment that surrounds your Pénichette®. From there, you'll discover secret forests, guided by the Woblitz River. The most enjoyable and surprising aspect of this waterways cruise on a self-drive boat is the freedom to go where you please.

3 ‘must-sees’ in Brandenburg’s lake region

Set off on your self-drive boat through the region known as the Tuscany of the North, where you’ll find serenity and a touch of the unexpected. Multiple interconnected waterways form a route through immense landscapes and unique cultural sites.

- The extravagant Sanssouci Palace
Overlooking the town of Potsdam, the grounds of this famous palace extend almost into its centre. Combining history with contemporary style, its magnificent gardens and pavilions are equally famous.

- Museuminsel, one island - five museums
The perfect place for a history fix. From Byzantine art to the bust of Nefertiti, this island of culture gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999 and is a must-see destination on any Berlin boat hire holiday.

- Templin, the gateway to great journeys
Just a few kilometres north of Berlin, Templin is surrounded by forests and lakes. The perfect opportunity to lace up your walking boots – good thing you brought them along! – or have some fun in a kayak.

Brandenburg & Berlin: discover German history via its waterways

This area of Brandenburg has countless beautiful landscapes to cruise through when you rent a boat from our base, only this time, exceptionally, a permit is required. After the cultural highlights of Berlin and Potsdam, set a north-westerly course to discover the Havel River valley. The activities available from your boat guarantee action-packed days ahead. The navigable river, 150km long, gives you access to the famous Westhavelland Nature Park by boat, bike and on foot. Next door to Fürstenberg, one of our two departure bases, is Himmelphort.

Its name means ‘Heaven’s Gate’, and it will also lead you to divine local specialities such as the Bockwurst sausage! Boat hire from this base allows you to explore the Neuruppin lakes, where otters, beavers and eagles will accompany you on your journey past historical castles. Travel at a pace that suits you aboard your superbly comfortable Pénichette®.
