Royal Wines and Calm Rivers

As you sail upstream on the Bodrog River, you'll pass vineyards, meadows, and marshes in the heart of the protected Tokaj-Bodrogzug area, a haven for migratory birds. From the deck of your license-free boat, scan the riverbanks in search of eagles, corncrakes, and storks... The village also hosts several wine cellars where you can taste the renowned Tokaj wines.

As you continue along the Bodrog, the Red Tower (Vörös torony), a medieval keep from the 15th century, comes into view. Visit the Rákóczi Palace, rebuilt from the 16th century,a true Renaissance jewel. Other must-sees include the Reformed College (Református Kollégium), the Gothic Vártemplom, and the Végardó Fürdő thermal baths, great for a family break.

Your boat trip on the Bodrog River leads to Sátoraljaújhely, right by the Slovak border. Thrill-seekers will love the Zemplén Kalandpark amusement park, home to the longest summer bobsleigh track and ski lift in Hungary, plus zip lines and a ski station. From here, continue to Tokaj to explore the Upper Tisza region.

Wander through this quiet village to visit its 11th-century Reformed church. You may spot unusual earth mounds – the remnants of an old fortress, still visible on foot if you follow the historical trail.

If cruising in late spring, you may be lucky to witness the rare “Tisza bloom”: millions of mayflies rise above the river, mate, and die in a stunning natural spectacle that lasts only three or four days each year.

Dombrád lives to the rhythm of the Tisza. Carp, roach, pike, perch, catfish, mullet: the river’s fish-rich waters attract fishing enthusiasts. Dock your riverboat here for a relaxing break and a swim on its pretty sandy beach. You’ll then sail upstream on the Upper Tisza with your boat to reach Tokaj and continue down the Tisza further south.
